Trust The Plan
As a little girl, I recall my mother perched by my bedside reading the story of Lazarus, a friend of Jesus, who had fallen gravely ill. Though word was sent of Lazarus’ fateful condition, Christ chose to delay his visit. When Jesus arrived, Lazarus’ sister Martha cried, “Lord, if you had been here my brother would not have died.” Lazarus’ lifeless body decayed entombed for four days upon Jesus’ arrival. Jesus replied, “Your brother will rise again.” Though Martha could not understand His plan…she had faith.
On this day, many years later, while bowing over my mother’s bedside, I found myself praying for my own Lazarus miracle. It seemed as though time stood still, yet it had been five months since our trip to the mountains of Lake Tahoe – to a little spot inauspiciously named ‘Heavenly’. Ironically, the last five months had been a living hell. How could I have known then that her simple cold would spiral into streptococcal pneumonia, then sepsis? How could I have foreseen that my mother would slip into a vegetative coma with little hope for recovery? HOW could I have trusted that it was all part of God’s plan?
Yet it is in our darkest days, that we discover the most beautiful qualities of our character. In this grim hour, kneeled by my mother’s side while recalling her bedtime story of Lazarus, I learned to surrender to HIS PLAN. I did not know the plan, yet I had faith that through Him, NOTHING is impossible.
Earlier, a team of well-prepared doctors came with charts and graphs in-hand to explain in excruciating detail the gravity of my mother’s condition, and recommended to discontinue life-support. It seemed as though her valiant battle approached its end and it was time to concede. The family agreed to gather at 9:30A.M., while the doctors proceeded with THEIR PLAN. With her hand in mine, I gazed at the clock – 8:37 A.M. Less than one hour remained before my mother’s date with destiny.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and lifted my head to meet my father’s eyes. Without a word, I stepped out of the room to give my father time for his last goodbyes. One-by-one, family members gathered down the hall, greeting each other silently with tears and heartfelt embraces. Thirty minutes passed, yet it seemed as though we stood on the ledge between time and eternity.
And just then… the miracle of HIS PLAN was revealed. For God is not bound by the constraints of time or the plans of man. His timing and His plan are always perfect.
Our grieving party stood mouths agape, as my father stumbled down the corridor with tears streaming down his face. Breathless, he muttered, “She’s awake! She’s awake!” The wonder-struck gaze in my mother’s eyes as our uproarious crowd charged into her hospital room, is forever etched in my memory. Shouts of joy and cries of disbelief echoed through the halls of that once somber place. Despite all of her doctors’ best predictions, my mother was raised back to life less than thirty minutes before OUR PLAN to end it. God had OTHER PLANS for her.
‘For I know the plans I have for you’ declares the Lord ‘plans to prosper you, and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’ Jeremiah 29:11
Though years have passed since my mother’s miraculous revival, the beauty and mystery of God’s plan has never left me. As I venture through this journey of the Great Awakening of mankind, I am reminded of my mother’s own awakening.
At times it seems as though the sickness which plagues this world is so malignant, that there is no hope for recovery. And still other times, it seems as though we watch over our brothers and sisters as they lie in a state of spiritual and cognitive slumber, unaware of the venomous evil coursing through the veins of this earth and poisoning humanity.
Yet in our darkest hour, I have seen a blessing of hope rise up among those of us who are awakened. We may not fully know or understand the plan, but we have faith – not in the plans of man, for they are flawed, but in His plan, which is always perfect.
I know in my heart, that I will one day witness the glorious awakening of mankind from our dreamless slumber, and for this cure to flow in streams through the heart of humanity to the far-reaches of our planet. As for me, THIS is the TRUE meaning of ‘Trust the Plan.’
